When I was a young collector no one checked or typed my stamps for me. I bought my own perf gauge, watermark detector, magnifier and catalog to identify stamps. If you can’t or don’t want to do this, contact and pay an expert to certify your stamp(s) and give you a catalog and/or price guide value. Also, like 85% of stamps in the 19th century U. It may have faults: hinge remnant, tears, pulled perfs, blunted perfs, clipped perfs, rounded corners, straight edges, holes, thins, stains, scuffs, etc. See scans of front and back of stamp. All stamps prior to 1861 were demonitarized (declared “worthless”) because of the onset of the civil war with thousands of U. Stamps in “enemy” hands; ie: Confederate post offices. Stamps were currency until 1963. In the early 20th century train robbers considered sheets of stamps a “score” which is why some stamps in the “robbery prone” states of “KANS” & “NEBR” were overprinted in 1929 to unsuccessfully thwart the robbers. Likewise catalogs post 1963 said “DON’T SEND STAMPS”. In many countries like Greece, India, etc. Stamps have expiration dates.
