JUST RECEIVED FROM MEMBER “JOHN” AND WANT ALL INTRERESTED IN MY OFFERED ITEMS TO BE INFORMED OF SAME; FYI – MAC V stood for “Military Advisory Command Vietnam” – You are correct that SOG stood for Studies and Observations Group. Within SOG there awere number of operational components but the ones where most of the activity took place were in the SOAs (Special Operations Augmentation) units of which there were 3, SOA CCN (in the north, first in Phu Bai & after’68 in DaNang), SOA CCC (in Kontum in the central highlands), and SOA CCS (in the south in Ban MeThuot). They performed recon, raids, POW snatches, interdiction, BDAs, etc in North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. They operated mostly in small teams of from 4 – 10 men and on occasion, in larger groups. They were disbanded in 1972 and remained highly classified for 29 years when they were given a Presidential Unit Citation for their actions. You can find/read the citation on line.
